Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of specialized and complex Fire Department automotive and related equipment.

This is a promotional opportunity for City of Reno Civil Service employees who meet the minimum qualifications listed below and is also open to other individuals who meet the minimum qualifications listed below. City of Reno Civil Service employees who pass the examination process will have seniority points added to their final grade.
Examples of essential functions:
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Performs general repair on all types of gasoline and diesel engines.
Maintains and repairs such equipment as Fire Department cars, trucks and heavy vehicles.
Diagnoses and replaces defective engine, transmission and brake components.
Tests, tunes, and adjusts carburetors, brakes, air brakes, hydraulic systems, clutches, transmissions, differentials, and fire pump assemblies.
Uses specialized equipment to diagnose and repair.
Repairs and rebuilds brake systems.
Performs condition tests on equipment including Fire Department cars, trucks, pumpers and aerial apparatus.
Performs technical maintenance on specialized fire fighting equipment such as fire pumps, portable generators and light plants, smoke ejectors, hydraulic systems, sirens, and emergency lights.
Assists in preparing specifications for fire apparatus, other motor vehicles, specialized tools and equipment.
Maintains records, written and electronic, of equipment and materials used and time spent on each piece of equipment.
Welds, fabricates, and modifies equipment.
Operates and repairs breathing air apparatus and systems.
Note: The person selected for this position will be expected to be available for paid on-call hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
