Under supervision perform repairs and services on all Fire Department vehicles and firefighting equipment; and to do related work as required.
 Essential Functions:
Inspects, repairs and services a variety of firefighting equipment, including Class “A” pumpers, water tankers, brush firefighting trucks, and ambulances; maintains records of time worked and service repair orders; assists in the design and fabrication of necessary modifications of fire equipment; uses and maintains a complete set of hand, power, and shop tools and test equipment related to the work; requisitions or orders replacement parts as necessary; observes safe work methods and utilizes safety equipment related to the work; reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, blueprints, and plans in performing work assignments; responds to emergency situations as required; performs field work as assigned; assists in the development of specifications for new equipment; stays current with technology in the mechanical field, particularly as it relates to fire apparatus; drives on City business.
 Minimum Qualifications:
Employment Standards: Knowledge of practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the diagnosis, repair, and modification of fire apparatus, their component systems and a wide variety of mechanical equipment; metal and wood fabrication and welding as it pertains to fire apparatus; shop mathematics; safety practices; rigging principles and practices used in handling heavy objects; computers and computer programs that assist in the accomplishment of assigned tasks. Skill in the use of arc and acetylene welding equipment. Ability to perform major and minor repairs on heavy duty air and hydraulic brake systems, air compressors, water pumps and electrical systems on ambulances and fire apparatus; proficiently use common mechanical tools and special tools used in the repair trade; read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans, and specifications; manually lift heavy objects that may weigh as much as 100 pounds; perform work involving moderate physical activity and climbing; trace electrical wiring by color coding and touch; recognize and diagnose mechanical problems by sight and sound; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other fire agencies, outside agencies, supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

Education/Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent and four (4) years experience as a mechanic performing overhaul and repairs on gasoline and diesel engines.

License & Certificates:  A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent at time of appointment and a California Class “B” driver’s license or equivalent at time of permanent appointment.

Desirable Qualifications:  
Fire apparatus repair experience.
