ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPEN AND COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION – FIRE MECHANIC I

Monthly Salary Range: approximately $6,506.58 to $7,908.79
Submission Deadline: 12 PM on January 25, 2016

THE POSITION
The class of Fire Mechanic I is an entry-level position in the Fire Mechanic series performing basic to moderately
difficult mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of the Department’s fleet such as passenger cars,
trucks, fire equipment and fire apparatus. This class is distinguished from the next higher classification of Fire
Mechanic II in that the latter is an advanced journey-level classification responsible for a more complex level of
mechanical work and provides lead direction to the Fire Mechanic I. The classifications of Fire Mechanic I and
Fire Mechanic II are alternately staffed positions.
This classification is a Fair Labor Standards Act non-exempt, represented position in the Classified Service.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Appointment for the Fire Mechanic I is generally made at the first step of the range. Retirement benefits will
conform to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Currently, Classic miscellaneous employees
pay 8% of employee contribution, which is tax-deferred. Public Employee Pension Retirement Plan (PEPRA)
employees currently pay 6.5%, which is tax-deferred. The Department does not participate in Social Security.
Current benefits include: Department paid medical and dental premiums; paid life insurance of $40,000; vision
plan; education reimbursement plan; direct deposit plan; personal leave; sick leave; vacation; 13 holidays per
year; 9/80 Alternate Work Schedule upon request; voluntary deferred compensation plan; and credit union
service.

This classification is represented by International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1165.
